Purpose/Objective

A leadership role reporting directly to the Construction Director based at our Borehamwood Offices and visiting sites on a regular basis to assist our project teams. Taking the lead in developing Health, Safety & Environmental strategy and standards, and ensuring that they are embedded within the organisation. You will be responsible for setting the strategic framework for the management of these standards and for defining and delivering against objectives that enable both the achievement of these standards and continuous improvement. You will be a provider of information, giving technical guidance on all Health, Safety & Environmental matters, identifying and advising on current and future requirements and ensuring that systems, policies, processes and training are in place to support the continuing development of a HSE culture across the organisation. You will have the ability to work at all levels across the organisation and have demonstrable experience in a similar role.
Role This role involves a strong presence and having the vision of creating a better working practice. You will advise on all aspects of Health, Safety and Environmental Management, ensuring standardisation and adherence to best practice. This role is primarily site focused, but when requires the post holder will be expected to assist with HSE duties at our Factory and Office locations, and liaise closely with other staff and the Factory HSE Manager.

The main aspects of the role will be to:

  • To act as the organisation’s lead competent person for Health and Safety as defined by the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations and the Construction Regulations.
  • Working in collaboration with the wider teams to set the strategic framework for the management of Health, Safety & Wellbeing and Environmental standards, engaging stakeholders across the business to ensure that these standards are understood and embedded.
  • Provide guidance and advice to the Directors to ensure that the organisation complies with statutory obligations and best practice.
  • Provide coaching, specialist advice and practical support on all HSE matters to the management teams.
  • Prepare and present KPI’s for the HSE committee.
  • Keep up to date with new HSE legislation and best practice developments that affect the organisation, ensuring that when necessary, policies, procedures and processes are appropriately updated.
  • Responsible for producing the monthly KPI and management performance report.
  • Assist in the identification of HSE training needs for employees across the organisation. Develop and deliver this training as required.
  • Lead investigations and assist others to investigate incidents / accidents. Ensure the effective management of corrective actions, reporting internally and externally if required. Ensure the effective communication of lessons learned.
  • Actively contribute to safeguarding the people we support including staff, employees, subcontractors and visitors.
  • Regular visits to our construction sites to complete thorough audits and produce reports which are issued to the project manager and Directors.
  • Manage and coordinate audits, including liaising with external contractors.
  • Demonstrates good compliance knowledge of Quality Assurance principles.
  • Experience of reaching and maintaining externally audited management systems such as ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and considerate constructor’s scheme.
  • To complete any other duties and responsibilities when requested, which are commensurate with this role.

Candidate
The successful candidate will be an experienced HSE Practitioner, with a willingness to develop this role. To cover all project requirements, candidates must be willing to commit to travel on a regular basis. Candidates should have worked at a Management level in a health and safety role and have a stable employment history.

Most importantly, the role requires someone with initiative who will take ownership for their work and be able to represent the company's interests in an appropriate way. You will have an excellent reputation with clients as having the impact and ability to deal with any situation in a calm and professional manner. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, as this role will involve extensive communication with all levels of staff.

Desirable Qualifications

NEBOSH Certification - (Diploma or equivalent)

CMIOSH (or working towards)

Internal QMS Auditor

Risk Management Qualification

Environmental Management Qualification

Experience

5 years’ experience of working as a HSE Manager level within a construction environment.

Significant experience of the implementation of strategic H&S and the enforcement of best practice standards.

Previous experience of change management to promote and encourage a culture where HSE is priority

Knowledge of Microsoft Office, in particular Word, Excel and Outlook and has a proven excellent health and safety record.

Experience of the building envelope sector to include curtain walling and unitised facades.

Knowledge of OHSAS 18001
